Today is Ben's birthday. As I was praying for him last night, I actually found myself at a loss for words, which never happens to me. But I had this moment of trying to think of how to thank God for the wonderfulness of Ben, and my mind went...blank. How do you put into words the ways in which someone has changed your life with all the kind, fun, supportive, godly, fun-loving, wise, amazing qualities that Ben brings to our world every day? I have no idea.
I've decided to take more pictures this year. Will that be a problem, with children who hate having pictures taken of them? Most likely.
Things my children have said to me this morning:
2023 did not start with a bang at our house. We dragged our sick, feverish bodies into the New Year with what little energy we could muster, and called it good enough. I missed all that wonderful year-in-review energy, and it feels like I'm arriving very late to the 2023 party, but here we are. 2022 was a good one, and she deserves a little recognition.🙂
This year, I actually did research to figure out which Christmas movies to watch. I read numerous lists of this year's best Christmas movies, and compared rankings. While doing so, I stumbled across a Christmas movie madlib sheet by @thepopcast, which turned out to be lots of fun. Kaylia got my vote for best plot - I would love to watch her movie about a big city mermaid who returns to her hometown in Vermont to run the Homeless Drummer Boy event, where she literally runs into her boss, Beckett.
Last night was a significant night for our family. We made the unanimous decision to never again make a gingerbread house together as a family. It's been a Christmas tradition since Anika was three years old, and it's been a disaster every time. The worst year was when we bought the gingerbread train kit, just to switch things up. It exceeded our expectations...but the switch was only negative. There were far too many parts that slide around from trying to assemble a gingerbread train, and I don't think Ben ever recovered.
