Christmas Photo Challenge

Posted in Family by Kendra

When Christmas rolls around, I’m always drawn to books or articles about how to simplify the holidays. Christmas was magical to me when I was a kid, but when Ben and I got married, and suddenly had seven different gatherings to get to in the span of a week or two, the holiday lost a […]

Making Space For Christmas

Posted in Spiritual Growth by Kendra

A few weeks ago, I was part of a discussion about how to have a meaningful Christmas. We never came to a conclusion, it was more just a time of expressing a desire and longing for something deeper, heartfelt, of substance. I left that discussion, and then proceeded to think about it for the next […]

And We Thought We Were Done…

Posted in Family, Spiritual Growth by Kendra

Sweet friends. It is with growing excitement, as well as a fair amount of lingering shock, that I give you this news: We are having a baby!! What??! I know. Me too! We thought we were done. I didn’t want to be done, but I really thought we were. I always said that when I […]

Switch on Your Brain

Posted in Life Lessons by Kendra

I’ve been reading such a fantastic book recently. I bought it for myself for Christmas. I’d been watching Caroline Leaf youtube videos, and finally decided I needed to try some of this “brain detox” stuff she was talking about. source Like any detox, it was quite nasty at first, and then it was quite wonderful. […]

We've had many tough chats around here about friendship over the years. It can be so hard to know how to help our kids process relationships, so I've been thinking a lot about an analogy my friend once shared with me.
Father's Day is always about breakfast for Ben. He is so easygoing that it's hard to find ways to make things special for him, because everything is always fine, but a big breakfast is the one thing we can count on.
Now we can say we drove through floodwaters to be with her.😘
One of Everett's favourite story podcast hosts is getting married, which led to this conversation:
There was once a time in June, the year I turned 19, when I spent a magical evening in Kenora while the apple trees were in bloom. I was working at camp and a bunch of us had the evening off, so we drove out to Kenora to explore. We walked and walked along sidewalks lined with apple trees, while the sun set over the lake, and the air was heavy with the smell of blossoms.
Our dear Kaylia became a teenager this weekend, and a delightful teenager she will be. 13 looks like: endless imaginative creations made with whatever fabric, cardboard, packing tape, rainbow loom bands, plastic from the recycling bin, or branches she drags into our yard▪️never wanting to try any new experience or activity that isn't her own idea, but usually loving it once she does (She would much rather sit on the sidelines, because she says, "It's the most WONDERFUL thing to sit and just watch how much fun everyone else is having!!" And she means it with her whole heart❤️)▪️great sadness over how tall she is getting, because she would rather stay short▪️spending as many hours as possible curled up with a book▪️a passion for plants and growing things▪️a never-ending supply of solutions for solving any problem - if you ever need suggestions for how to fix random broken objects, end the war in Ukraine, or parent a younger sibling, she is your girl▪️dreams of becoming an animator for Disney (she will be the driving force behind Incredibles 3)▪️When I asked her last night if she was getting used to the idea of becoming a teenager, she scrunched up her face and said, "Do I have to?" Sometimes growing up is hard, and Kaylia will never be the one running ahead, trying to speed up the process. She will be the one coming along at her very own pace, taking the time to delight in all the little things past and present, and reminding us that there's always more room for creativity. Our world is a brighter, more colourful place because she is in it. 💕
