Everett decided to cook breakfast, in honour of International Women's Day, which he accidentally read on the calendar as "Intelligent Women's Day".

One of my favourite tips from the book "The Secrets of Happy Families" is to have difficult conversations "as though you're French". Bruce Feiler writes that the French eat a meal sitting beside each other, instead of across the table from one another. When we're physically on the same side, it's easier to feel like we're also emotionally on the same side. Bonus points for sitting on soft chairs, because we can take harder emotional hits when our bodies are on a soft surface.

On the morning of Ben's birthday, Kaylia and Everett decided that it was their sudden heart's desire to bake glazed, jam-filled donuts as a surprise for Ben. Has anyone in this home ever made glazed, jam-filled donuts? No, we have not. Nobody here has any idea how to do that.

Today is Ben's birthday. As I was praying for him last night, I actually found myself at a loss for words, which never happens to me. But I had this moment of trying to think of how to thank God for the wonderfulness of Ben, and my mind went...blank. How do you put into words the ways in which someone has changed your life with all the kind, fun, supportive, godly, fun-loving, wise, amazing qualities that Ben brings to our world every day? I have no idea.

I've decided to take more pictures this year. Will that be a problem, with children who hate having pictures taken of them? Most likely.
